Call for entries: Ocean Film Festival
The organizers of the annual San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival are calling for entries to the 2015 event. The Festival will be held from 5 to 9 March 2015 at the Bay Theatre, Aquarium of the Bay, Pier 39, San Francisco.
Sony announces the α5100 camera
Sony has announced the release of their α5100 mirrorless camera. It has a 4.3 MP APS-C Exmor™ CMOS sensor, the BIONZ X processor and the Hybrid AF system from the α6000. Video can be recorded in XAVC S2 formats, which can output at 50 Mbps and in dual formats to the same card.
Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue available on Netflix
Dr Sylvia Earle’s biography and call to action, Mission Blue, has now been released on Netflix. The film traces Sylvia’s life of wonder and exploration, and her dedication to awakening the world to the need to give the ocean time and space to recover. The purpose of the film is to encourage people to act on the looming crisis that will, eventually, destroy the oceans and hence radically affect life on earth.
Diving into a new camera system
Dan Beecham, along with Charles Maxwell talk about their choice of the Sony F55 camera for underwater use. They highlight the advantages of shooting both 4K and in a RAW format as well as how faithful the camera’s colorimetry is underwater. Wetpixel Oceanic Whitetips 2015
Wetpixel will be visiting Cat Island, Bahamas in 2015 to photograph, film and interact with the amazing oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) that are in the area during May and April. The trip will run from 12-18 April and we will be hosted by Epic Diving, who are well known for providing amazing, reliable and safe interactions with these amazing animals.
BtS announces buoyancy float system
Beneath the Sea (BtS) has released a float system for their arms. Constructed of a high density foam, each 2” (50mm) segment offers 4 oz (113g) of buoyancy. The floats are available in 3 kits to suit differing length BtS arms.
Sony announces the PXW-X70 camcorder
Sony has announced the release of a pro XDCAM camcorder which will be upgraded to be 4K enabled later in 2014. The PXW-X70 camera has Wi-Fi control and a 1” type Exmor® R CMOS sensor with a Zeiss Varion Sonnar T lens.
Cannon warns about some third party batteries
In a PSA video posted on YouTube, Canon USA have warned about inferior production techniques in some third party batteries. They aren’t against using 3rd party batteries per se; they are simply concerned that users are able to identify those that are safe to use and has been produced to the correct specifications.
