Results: Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014

The results of the 2014 Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest were announced last night at a gala occasion at the Natural History Museum in London, England. The winner of the Underwater Species category was Indra Swart Wonowidjojo of Indonesia with an image of two whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) taken at Cenderawasih Bay. Heartfelt congratulations to all those placed in the contest.

DEMA 2014: Image Resource Center Schedule

The schedule for the 2014 Image Resource Center at the DEMA Show has been posted onto the DEMA website. The IRC serves as a centerpiece to the imaging section of the show. Speakers include Cristian Dimitrius, Erin Quigley, John Ellerbrock, Berkley White, Stephen Frink and Chris Parsons. As always Wetpixel will be reporting from the show for those that can’t make it!

Jason deCaires Taylor unveils new underwater sculpture in Bahamas

Jason deCaires Taylor, well known for his underwater sculptures, has unveiled a new sculpture titled Atlas off New Providence in Nassau, Bahamas. The 18 foot tall and 60 ton sculpture is the larges underwater sculpture ever to be deployed underwater. The sculpture was commissioned by the Bahamas Reef Environment Education Foundation and the hope is that it will eventually be colonized as an artificial reef.

Video: Bahamas Underwater Photo Week by Cristian Dimitrius

The Bahamas Underwater Photo Week was held in May this year, with Alert Diver with the Bahamas Diving Association inviting 4 pro shooters to document a week underwater in the islands. Wetpixel reported “live” from the event, with Abi Mullens and Adam Hanlon embedded into the photography teams. At the same time, Emmy Award winning filmmaker Cristian Dimitrius undertook a” DCI inducing” tour of all the photo teams at work at their respective islands.

Paper studies inter octopus asphyxiation

A new paper by Christine Huffard and Mike Bartick has been published in the journal Molluscan Research. Entitled “Wild Wunderpus photogenicus and Octopus cyanea employ asphyxiating ‘constricting’ in interactions with other octopuses, it catalogs several instances in which “aggressive constriction” has been seen in an instance of apparent sexual cannibalism and in an attempt to eliminate a competitor for a food source.
