Coral protections lead UNESCO to remove Belize barrier reef from World Heritage Sites in Danger
In a victory for coral, UNESCO has removed the Belize barrier reef from the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The barrier reef of Belize is the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere. The reef was included on the list of World Heritage sites in 1996, but then included on the list of sites in danger in 2009 due to oil exploration and mangrove destruction for real estate. Belize has implemented a moratorium on oil exploration in the entire maritime system of the country, which lead to the barrier reefs removal from the danger list. The purpose of the list is to bring awareness to threats facing World Heritage sites and to hopefully encourage corrective behavior.

$158 million addition all about Sharks opens in New York Aquarium
A new exhibit at the New York Aquarium opened this past weekend, and it is all about sharks. The 57,000 square foot and $158 million addition is called Ocean Wonders: Sharks! The addition comes as much the aquarium is still rebuilding from being hit by hurricane Sandy. The new addition of the aquarium, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, has been in the works for the past 14 years. The goal of the addition was to educate visitors about the vital role sharks play in our oceans.
Late Availability: Mexico Whale Sharks August 2018
We have a few spaces available on the 2018 Wetpixel Whale Sharks trip. It is running from 10 to 16 August and we will be based in comfortable accommodation at the Playa la Media Lune hotel on Isla Mujeres. Unlike most trips that run to see the sharks, our skippers are full time professional charter boat captains that spend the bulk of their time at seas looking for fish. We also tend to leave early and stay late, allowing us to maximize the crucial times when the sharks are relatively undisturbed by other parties.
