Pollution levels in the Mariana Trench are at ‘Extraordinary’ levels
In a recently published study, scientists have shown that organic pollutants are present in full ocean depths at many times higher than even the most polluted river in China. Scientists found that pollutants in crabs collected in the Mariana Trench, which is 36,000 feet deep, were 50 times higher than crabs found in the Liaohe River, one of the most polluted rivers in China. Two chemicals found were POPs that were produced between the 1930’s and 1970’s, showing a long term effect on the environment.

Václav Krpelik captured this amazing image of a whiptail stingray (Himantura fai) surrounded by a school of schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) whilst freediving in the Maldives. He was kind enough to share it on the Wetpixel Facebook Group.
Nikon announces cut backs and job losses
Nikon Japan has announced a series of cost cutting measures. These include seeking voluntary redundancy for 1,000 workers, a “notice of extraordinary loss” and the cancellation of the DL series of compact cameras. Nikon are citing a “slow-down of the market” as the reason for the planned restructuring.
Underwater Photographer of the Year 2017: Results
The Underwater Photographer of the Year has announced its results First place was awarded to Gaby Barathieu for his image of a hunting octopus. The winner of the British photographer contest was Nick Blake. Congratulations to all those that placed in the contest, especially to the many members of the Wetpixel community.
2nd annual Kona Underwater Shootout announced
The second annual Kona Underwater Shootout, hosted by Kona Honu Divers, has been announced. The dates for the shootout are May 12th - 15th 2017. Images need to be shot in Kona during these dates and competitors will need to be present for the awards ceremony. Grand prize is a trip on the Palau Aggressor.
Call for Image submission for tribute to Rob Stewart
Rob Stewart devoted his life to sharks and their conservation. Shortly after his tragic death, Simon Rogerson of Scuba Magazine suggested that we should create a “wall” of shark images to honour his memory. Wetpixel would like to take this idea one stage further, and are seeking submissions from anyone who wishes to take part in a Full Frame feature of shark imagery devoted to Rob Stewart.
Ikelite ships housing for Sony a6500
Ikelite are shipping their housing for the Sony a6500 mirrorless camera. Constructed of Ikelite’s new ABS-PC material and featuring their TTL (with Ikelite strobes) strobe triggering, the housing also has their new DLM port mounting system.
Firmware updates allows 4K 60P with Shogun Inferno and GH5
Atomos has just released a firmware update for their Shogun Inferno. Version 8.11 allows for 4K 60P 10-bit 4:2:2 external recording with the Panasonic GH5. News Shooter reports that this gives the combination “high-bitrate Apple ProRes recording at a better bit depth and frame rate than any other mirrorless competitor.”
