NOAA live streams video from the Marianas Trench
NOAA is live streaming video from ROVs exploring the Marianas Trench and surrounding areas. The Okeanos Explorer is carrying out an expedition to collect baseline information and survey this largely unexplored area. The explorations is useing “teleprescence” to interpret data, with scientists in the U.S.A. standing “watches” as the video feeds are piped live from the vessel via satellite internet and providing comments as they view them.
Video: The Not So Silent World by Evan Sherman
Evan Sherman has produced an amazing short film featuring the macro life of Tulamben, Indonesia. He combines super macro filming, with a post processing approach that incorporates the use of sound effects to interpret the noises the animals might be making. The title is a nod to Jacques Cousteau’s Silent World series of films and books.
William Trubridge breaks free diving world record, twice
Free diver William Trubridge broke the world record in free immersion this past Saturday by diving to a depth of 122 meters, and then promptly broke it again on Monday by adding two more meters to his record. The world record dive of 124 meters (approximately 407 feet deep) was made at the annual Vertical Blue free diving competition in Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas. The previous world record was made in 2011 by Trubridge as well.
IPTC releases study about metadata stripping
The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) has just released the results of a second test that studied how social media sites interact with metadata. Most Wetpixel members are aware that metadata is important to track image usage and ensure that copyrights are not violated. Only one of the social media sites tested, Behance, retained all metadata. In fact many of the sites were removing more metadata now than they were in 2013.
Drought affects Jellyfish Lake
Due to a severe drought affecting the nation, Palau’s famous Jellyfish Lake has been removed from the itineraries of most of the operators in the region. Estimates are that the population of jellyfish in the lake have dropped from around 8 million to under 600,000. Professional underwater surf photographer Sarah Lee has posted an article with her top seven tips for underwater surf photography. Sarah was recently profiled by [SmugMug(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sSX-AJNMjE&feature=youtu.be) and featured in a video discussing her surf photography techniques and inspiration.
Sayang announces 14mm E mount lens
Samyang has announced their first autofocus lenses. One of these is a 14mm wide angle for Sony E mount full frame sensors. As Sony full frame cameras wide angle choices are limited, this is an interesting development. Full specifications and minimum focus distance are still to be announced however.
