Call for entries: University of Miami RSMAS underwater photo contest

The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is accepting submissions for their Annual Underwater Photography Contest, now through 17 May. Winners of the five categories, Fish or Marine Animal Portrait, Macro, Wide Angle, UM Student, and Best Overall, will be displayed in a traveling exhibit throughout southern Florida.

The MDX-6D is made from black anodized aluminum alloy and gives access to almost all of the camera’s essential underwater functions (except Depth-of-Field Preview button). Sea & Sea’s YS Converter/C can now be built into the MDX-6D housing by dealers.

As it has been for the last 3 years, the ScubaCam/Wetpixel party was held on the first night of the Asian Dive Expo 2013 at Verve Pizza Bar. This year, the turn out was especially strong, with over 40 people joining the party, and it turned into a standing room only affair. From manufacturers like Subal and Nauticam to dive centers and even conservationists like Manta Trust, it was a fun night… and yes, we closed the bar down! I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon presents a preview of the new “Visualize Spots” feature in the Adobe Lightroom 5 beta. The mode, designed for identifying lens and sensor dust spots, opens the image with a black and white mask. The amount of detail that is shown can be controlled with a threshold slider. Adam has found that the mode is an amazing way of finding backscatter in images.

A team from Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University are hoping to attract crowd-funding via [Kickstarter}(http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/376482095/coral-bots-teams-of-robots-that-repair-coral-reefs) for a project that will produce “coral-bots.” These are autonomous underwater robots that navigate across reefs, assessing damaged sections and transplanting healthy coral into those areas.
