Underwater review of EOS 1D-X Mark II on DPReview

Wetpixel sponsor Backscatter Underwater Photo and Video has recently had their review of the Canon EOS 1D-X Mk.II posted on DPReview. Their review finds that the camera’s ISO performance and manual white balance performer make it a strong contender for video shooters although its autofocus and large file sizes/storage issues are more limiting. The review highlights the ability to overcrank footage from 60fps to 30fps in order to get more stable images.

Great white shark population threatened

A new survey has found that the population numbers of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) off South Africa is about half what had been expected. A paper in Marine Ecology Progress Series shows the results of a six year study into the numbers of the apex predators and shows that there are only between 353 and 522 of the sharks. NOAA’s deepwater exploration of the Mariana Trench with the Okeanos Explorer, a former Navy surveillance vessel, has wrapped up with some wild and weird new discoveries. Many new species never seen before as well as the discovery of a WWII B29 bomber wreck on the seafloor. The Mariana Trench contains the deepest spot in the ocean at 36,037 feet and is located in the Pacific Ocean off the Mariana Islands.
