Service Advisory: EOS 1-DX Mark 2 and SanDisk CFast cards
Canon has announced that when the EOS-1D X Mark II is used with some SanDisk CFast cards, image corruption can occur. The issue is card, rather than camera related and a work around is to shoot a few extra non-critical frames before powering the camera down. These may corrupt, but this will prevent and critical images for being harmed. Canon is considering releasing a firmware update to address the problem.
Video: Dolphins swimming in bioluminescent waters
A video recently shared on Imgur shows dolphins bow riding at night. Sounds simple enough, but the video is shot without artificial light and shows the plankton being disturbed and bioluminescing, highlighting the dolphin forms as they swim and dive off the bow of a boat at night.
Using bioluminescent vomit to attract mates
Many underwater photographers have witnessed strings of what appear to be glowing beads while on night dives in the Caribbean. But, did you even wonder what they were? Turns out they are glowing streams of vomit from tiny shrimp-like ostracods used to attract females. Sounds gross, but looks enchanting. Image from [Shutterstock}(http://www.shutterstock.com/).
Give ‘Em the Fin this week
Sea Save are running a campaign encouraging people to give shark finning “the fin”. This asks people to upload images of themselves with a hand raised above their heads to a global mosaic on the Sea Save site. This will then go to the CITES congress in South Africa in September as an expression of public support for the protection of sharks.
Norbert Wu’s Favorite Images: Deep Sea Anglerfish
In this episode of underwater photographer Norbert Wu’s favorite images column, he talks about photographing and sampling creatures that were caught as a part of a deep sea marine biology research project. His images of the deep sea anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsoni) went on grace the cover of Time magazine in 1995 and many other publications since then too.
Final Call: SDUFEX 2016
The San Diego Undersea Film Exhibition (SDUFEX) is making its final call for entries for the 2016 event. Selected entries will be shown at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall in San Diego, California on 7 and 8 October. For the first time, the contest is offering two cash prizes of $500 for the films selected by the audience as the best film of the evening. The deadline for submissions is 1 July.
Joe Romeiro opens trading at NASDAQ
Cinematographer and Wetpixel member Joe Romeiro rang the opening bell to commence trading at the NADAQ Market Site in Times Square today. The honor was bestowed on him in order to celebrate Discovery Communication’s Shark Week, which went to air on 26 June and will run through until 30 June.
Sea&Sea announces the MDX-D500 housing
Sea&Sea has announced details of their forthcoming housing for the Nikon D500. The MDX-D500 features Sea&Sea’s internal optical YS converter and redesigned levers for improved ergonomics. Lenses can be changed via the lens port and the camera’s diopter viewfinder is adjustable externally.
